There’s a fascinating new article on Kevin Kelly’s blog that I found out about through The Agitator. (It’s funny how sometimes work and hobbies intersect – this email came to my work address, but applies more to my music life).

Though I can already name a handful of local musicians who would be mad about the concept of this article – because “cultivating” your audience and trying to get them to spend more money on you is not quite part of the indie, diy essence – but so many indie bands want to “make it big” just based on an organic progression of fandom. And while I agree that is the best way to make a living from your band, I don’t think it’s always the most realistic way.
I’m particularly fascinated by the website Fundable. I’ve heard of this through friends but never really knew what it was all about. What a great concept.
This is also valuable to that faction of people (I can also name tons of these) who want to make a living on their art, craft or music and just don’t know how to manage the business aspect of it. Anyway, read the story and let me know what you think. I think it’s got some great points.
