Port O’Brien, claimed by both the Bay Area and the Central Coast as their own, has been continuously growing in popularity as their music moves beyond the college radio curcuit and across the country. The band’s indie-infused folk tunes are painfully catchy, tugging at heart strings and boot straps alike.

Hype. It’s a fascinating thing. The cynic in me wondered if the hype surrounding M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel’s new project She & Him was all based on the good looks and cult popularity of Ms. Deschanel. Hey, I admit I myself am guilty of being slightly enamoured of her, considering she was in one [...]

Rykarda Parasol - “Hannah Leah”

Elephone - “Moving Beds”
I don’t mind going to shows alone. Sometimes it’s nice not to have someone yelling in your already ringing ear and distracting you from the music. But when there are four bands playing, there’s a lot of down time between sets to sit on a bar stool and [...]

The Finches - “Daniel’s Song” mp3
The sinosauropteryx prima is a birdlike dinosaur with short, feather-like fibers on its body. That’s what I learned at the Academy [...]

From my headphones

Here’s a little sample of what’s on my playlist right now:

Guther - Sundet: I heard pieces of this album from a friend last year, and knew it was on Morr Records, but I never ordered it. Finally I found a copy in Streetlight, and it’s as good as I thought. Not quite Lali Puna or [...]

I went to just about the strangest show I’d ever been to on Friday night. Each band felt like a different night - like I was in a totally different place with completely different people. Here’s what I saw:
The first band, August House, was a typical Orange County band, on the verge of “emo” but [...]

I’ve officially started writing for The Deli SF, a great local music ‘zine. I’ve added a link bar on the right side of the page for stories that I’ve had published there. Hopefully there will be at least one a week. Here’s the first one, and after this I won’t post them in the blog [...]
